Greetings from Manning Publications!

As you might already be aware, Manning is an independent publisher of computer books and video courses for software developers, engineers, architects, system administrators, managers, and all who are professionally involved with the computer business. We also publish for students and young programmers, including occasionally for children.

For those of you who haven’t yet had the chance to learn from our books or video courses or if you just can’t get enough content from Manning, this is a great chance to get to know us (even) better. Namely, we’re going to be posting articles, excerpts, mental models, animations, slide decks, interviews, and more here on Medium — not to mention discounts, which everyone loves.

A little about us

We are an entirely virtual organization based on Shelter Island, New York, with many staff working from far-flung places like Manila and Zagreb.

“Independent” means we are not owned by a large corporate entity and are free to make decisions without bureaucratic overhead. That has allowed us to innovate and be flexible and to quickly adjust what we do as we go. We were the first by several years to sell our books as unprotected PDFs, something that later became commonplace. We were the first to start selling books before they were finished, in the Manning Early Access Program (MEAP). This gave our readers access to our content as soon as it was readable, and this too has become common in the industry. We spend a lot of time thinking about new ways to satisfy our customers, some of which we hope you will be pleased to discover in the not-too-distant future.

Some of our innovations

Apart from our MEAP program and commitment to selling eBooks without digital rights management (DRM), we also launched our interactive browser-based reader liveBook last year, offering features you won’t find anywhere else. With liveBook you can read your Manning books from any browser, add your own bookmarks and comments, and more. If you want to see how it works, you can unlock any book for 5 minutes per day. All you need is a manning.com account.

Another of our innovations is part of our liveBook reader: micropurchasing with Manning tokens. Have you ever only needed or wanted specific sections from a reference book and been frustrated that you had to shell out the money for the entire thing? With Manning tokens, you can buy just the content that you want, even if it’s only a paragraph. Best of all, you get 500 free tokens on us when you create a manning.com account and sign in to liveBook — go try it out!

We also launched our liveVideo platform last year. Our liveVideo training courses give you the keys to the cutting edge of software development, operations and data science. We’re firm believers in a learn by doing approach. Through short videos with integrated exercises, you’ll gain the skills you need to progress your career.

Learn with interactive video courses

Finally, this year we started adding liveAudio — another attractive liveBook optional feature — to some of our books. liveAudio integrates a professional voice recording with the book’s text, graphics, code, and exercises in Manning’s exclusive liveBook online reader. Use the text to search and navigate the audio, or download the audio-only recording for portable offline listening.
